Supplemental Transportation Programs for seniors

What is the Purpose of an STP?  In general, an STP has the purpose of providing much needed transportation to seniors who need rides but cannot access usual transportation services. The problem is especially acute for those in the age 85+ age group.  This age group is more likely than other older adults to be at risk for disability and chronic conditions and have a greater need for medical care, rehabilitation, social services, and physical support. Moreover, the health and mobility conditions of this age group may not only affect their ability to drive, but may result in a greater need for transportation assistance and support .  In many instances, such conditions also may negatively affect their ability to access public transportation options. STPs compliment traditional transportation options in three important ways:

(1)   They meet the needs of or target the 85+ population.

(2)   They provide escort services.

(3)   They provide both quantity and quality of life rides.
